Technically<\/strong><\/p>\n

Diamond is an allotrope, or a form, of the element carbon. A diamond is essentially carbon in a highly concentrated crystalline form. Within a diamond, carbon atoms are arranged in a three-dimensional crystal structure known as a diamond cubic lattice. This arrangement of carbon atoms gives diamond its exceptional physical properties.<\/p>\n

Diamond is one of the most concentrated crystalline forms of carbon found in nature and is the hardest naturally occurring mineral, ranking 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness. The secret to diamond’s exceptional hardness is found at the molecular level. Carbon atoms possess four valence electrons available for bonding. In diamond crystals, each carbon atom forms four strong covalent bonds with neighboring carbon atoms. This creates a rigid three-dimensional tetrahedral lattice that gives diamond its remarkable hardness and durability.<\/p>\n

Under these conditions, carbon atoms can crystallize into the diamond structure over geological periods of time.<\/p>\n
